My name is Andrew Thoesen.
This is an archive of my graduate research focused on robots, dirt, and how they work together.

I received my PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University at the end of 2019. Along the way, I interned at NASA Kennedy Space Center, NASA-CalTech Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and gave public talks including Phoenix Comicon, Ignite Phoenix and TEDxASU.  I currently work at Arizona Public Service as a Resource Planning Analyst.

Examples of My Work

Vehicle Mobility Experiments

I performed vehicle mobility experiments in granular media. Screw propelled vehicles fascinated me and I began here.

Vehicle Mobility Simulations

We replicated these experiments in simulated environments with an eye towards space applications using MBD-DEM software.

Public Speaking

A large influence in my life has been publicly funded science.  I grew up watching The Magic School Bus and Bill Nye the Science Guy.  I've been fortunate enough to receive fellowships for graduate school.  Any opportunity for science education and entertainment is a worthwhile endeavor.
